If the cover on your bike's seat is torn, replace it with a new piece of vinyl. After you have completed the repair, the seat will look as good as new and you will remain comfortable as you cruise around town.
Use The Following Items
- staple gun
- dust mask
- needle nose pliers
- permanent marker
- lint free cloth
- soapy water
- adjustable wrench
- utility knife
Remove The Seat And Prepare The Vinyl
Use a wrench to loosen the bolts that are holding the seat in place. Set the seat on a level surface as you are recovering it. Remove the original cover by gently prying out the staples that hold the cover in place with a pair of needle nose pliers. Lay the original cover on top of the new piece of vinyl. Trace it with a permanent marker. Hold the edges of the cover down while you are doing this. Cut out the outline of the seat cover with a pair of scissors.
Attach The New Piece Of Vinyl
Cover your face with a dust mask so that you do not breathe in harmful fumes as you apply the adhesive. Use a paintbrush to coat the seat with adhesive. Make sure that the adhesive is applied evenly. Instead of using adhesive that needs to be applied by hand, you can use spray adhesive if you would like. If you choose to use this type of product, hold the can several inches away from the seat. Spray it on evenly.
Line up the new piece of vinyl and press it down onto the adhesive covered surface. Attach staples to the edges of the vinyl with a staple gun. Pull the material tightly while doing this so that none of the vinyl wrinkles. After the piece of vinyl is attached, trim the edges of the material with a utility knife.
Maintain The Cover
Keep your bike stored in a shed so that the new seat cover is not in risk of becoming damaged. Clean the vinyl off with soapy water and a soft cloth when it becomes dirty. Never leave your bike in a sunny area for a long amount of time. Sunlight can cause the vinyl to crack or fade, diminishing the appearance of your bike. Taking good care of your bike and the new cover will ensure that it lasts for many years and provides you with a comfortable ride.
